Thank you for taking part in this year's Okanagan Lake beach cleanup in Kelowna. The organisers are deciding how to run the next event and want your view. Option A: move the cleanup to early spring, before the tourist season, so winter debris is cleared early, accepting a smaller volunteer turnout. Option B: keep it in late September, after the summer crowds, when more litter has built up and more volunteers are available. Thank you for inviting feedback on this year's Okanagan Lake beach cleanup in Kelowna. I took part with my family, and I would like to support Option B, keeping the event in late September. My main reason is that the timing matches the problem. The litter we collected was mostly summer litter: drink cans, food wrappers and plastic bags left by visitors during July and August. If the cleanup moved to early spring, much of that rubbish would still be buried under the winter sand, so we would clear far less of it. Waiting until late September means we deal with the mess while it is still there and still visible. I also think the volunteer turnout matters more than people assume. In spring, families are busy with school and sports and fewer people come out. In September we had more than enough hands, which made the work quick and enjoyable. If the organisers do decide to move the event to spring, I would ask them to run a second cleanup in the autumn and to provide more gloves and separate bins for recycling.
