Thank you for giving residents the opportunity to comment on the proposed East Kelowna development project. I have lived off Lakeshore Road for fifteen years, and I have direct experience with how development affects both the landscape and the community. My primary concern is fire safety. The proposal to build forty single-family homes on the eastern slope of Black Mountain is problematic because that area is classified as a moderate-to-high wildfire risk zone. During last year's McDougall Creek fire, this exact slope served as a natural firebreak, and replacing it with homes creates an unacceptable risk for both new residents and existing neighbourhoods below. I urge the council to require a full third-party fire risk assessment before approving any rezoning. My secondary concern is water supply. Our neighbourhood well system is already strained during August, and adding forty households would require a connection to the municipal system, which the current infrastructure plan does not budget for until 2030. I am not opposed to development in principle. Kelowna is growing, and we need more housing. But this particular site is the wrong location, and the proposal appears rushed.
