Task 1 — Writing an Email

You are a parent in Mississauga. The community centre has canceled the Saturday swim program due to maintenance. Write an email to the director. Suggest alternative days or programs, and ask for updates on the maintenance schedule.

Suggested length: about 150 words.

Dear Community Centre Director, I am writing to express my concern about the cancellation of the Saturday morning swim program at the Clarkson Community Centre. This program has been an important part of my family's weekend routine for over three years, and its sudden cancellation, with only one week's notice, has left many families disappointed and scrambling for alternatives. My son has been attending these lessons since he was five, and I have watched his confidence in the water grow steadily under the excellent instruction of Coach Ramirez. More importantly, this program is one of the few affordable swim options in our neighbourhood. Private lessons cost nearly three times as much, which many families like mine simply cannot manage. The program also serves as a social hub where parents connect and share community information while their children learn. I understand that maintenance issues cannot always be predicted, but I would respectfully ask that the centre consider two things. First, could you arrange a temporary partnership with the nearby Glen Abbey pool to host lessons until repairs are complete? Second, could you establish an email notification system so that families receive at least two weeks' notice for any future cancellations? These

Task 2 — Responding to Survey Questions

You recently participated in a memo about school bus services in Mississauga. Write a response expressing your concerns about route cancellations and provide suggestions for improvement.

Suggested length: about 150 words.

Sample high-scoring response

I am writing in response to the survey regarding Mississauga school bus services. As a mother of two children who attend Tomken Road Middle School, I have strong concerns about the current system. My primary frustration is the frequency of cancellations, particularly during the winter months. Last December alone, my children's bus route was cancelled six times, often with less than an hour's notice. On several occasions, I had already left for my shift at the hospital when the cancellation text arrived, forcing my husband to leave his construction site early to pick up the children. This is not sustainable. I believe the school board should consider three specific improvements. First, invest in winter-grade tires and de-icing equipment for the entire bus fleet rather than just the main routes. Second, create a backup driver pool so that cancellations due to driver illness do not leave entire neighbourhoods without service. Third, improve the parent notification system by using a mobile app with push alerts instead of email, because many working parents cannot check email during their shifts. I also support the proposal to stagger school start times, as this would allow the same buses to serve more routes efficiently. Thank you
