Task 1 — Writing an Email

As a public servant in Ottawa, you have noticed that many visitors during Winterlude are having difficulty finding their way to key attractions because of recent OC Transpo changes. Write an email to your supervisor suggesting two practical ways to improve the situation. Aim for around 150 words.

Suggested length: about 150 words.

Dear Winterlude Planning Committee, I am writing to report a recurring problem that I have observed during this year's Winterlude festival, which I believe can be easily addressed before the remaining weekends. As a public servant who works along Confederation Boulevard, I have noticed many visitors becoming confused and frustrated while trying to locate specific event sites. The primary issue is the signage at the Sparks Street entrance. The current signs direct visitors to the ice sculpture exhibition, but they do not indicate that the main skating rink and the children's activity tent are located in completely different areas. Just yesterday afternoon, I helped a family from Halifax who had been wandering for over thirty minutes with two young children in the cold. The mother told me they nearly gave up and went back to their hotel. That is not the experience we want visitors to have. I have two practical suggestions. First, we could create a simple colour-coded map with clear icons for each attraction and post it at all major entry points, including the Rideau Canal staircases and the Confederation Park entrance. I have attached a rough sketch of what this might look like.

Task 2 — Responding to Survey Questions

You are a regular user of OC Transpo. The city is conducting a notice about the recent route changes. Complete the notice by describing your experience and suggesting one improvement. Write about 150 words.

Suggested length: about 150 words.

Name: Alex Tremblay Use frequency: 5 times per week How have the route changes affected you? The changes have made my commute more challenging. I used to take the 16 bus from my stop in Sandy Hill to downtown in 15 minutes. Now the route is discontinued, and I have to transfer at Rideau Centre, which adds at least 20 minutes. Additionally, the bus frequency during off-peak hours has decreased, so I often wait 20 minutes for the 12 bus. This is particularly difficult in winter. The new electric buses are comfortable and quiet, which I appreciate. What one improvement do you suggest? I suggest restoring the 16 route during peak hours, or providing a direct express bus from Sandy Hill to Parliament Hill. This would significantly reduce commute times for many residents and tourists. I believe the city should prioritize direct connections to key destinations. Thank you for considering my feedback.
