Thank you for giving residents the opportunity to provide input on the proposed changes to the Halifax Ferry Service. I have lived in Dartmouth for twelve years and have relied on the ferry as my primary way to get to my job downtown every weekday. While I appreciate the city's effort to modernize the service, I have significant concerns about two proposals. First, reducing weekend service from every thirty minutes to every hour would hurt tourism and make it harder for shift workers to reach their jobs. Many hospitality employees work Saturday and Sunday mornings and have no other transit option at that hour. Second, the idea of raising fares by fifteen percent without any improvement in winter reliability seems unfair. During the past two winters, I experienced at least a dozen delays due to ice and mechanical issues that were never properly communicated. I would support a smaller fare increase if funds were directed toward de-icing equipment and real-time tracking on the Halifax Transit app. Until those issues are addressed, I do not believe residents should pay more for unreliable service.
