Task 1 — Writing an Email

You are a registered nurse working at a community clinic in Edmonton. Write an email to the City of Edmonton's Urban Planning Department in response to the invitation to a public consultation on the River Valley Trail expansion. In your email, explain why the trail expansion is important for health promotion in the community, and propose one specific feature (e.g., a fitness station, rest area, or lighting) that would make the trail more beneficial for residents. Write 150 words.

Suggested length: about 150 words.

Dear Mr. Kowalski, Thank you for inviting me to the consultation on the River Valley Trail expansion. As a registered nurse at a downtown Edmonton community clinic, I strongly support this project because it encourages physical activity, which is key to preventing chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. I propose adding a few outdoor fitness stations along the trail, especially near neighbourhoods with high population density. These stations could have simple equipment like pull-up bars and balance beams, accompanied by instructional signs. This addition would make the trail function as an outdoor gym, accessible to all ages and fitness levels. The stations would promote strength training and flexibility, which are often overlooked in typical walking routes. I also recommend ensuring the trail has adequate lighting and benches for rest stops. I look forward to discussing these ideas at the consultation. Thank you for considering community health in this development. Sincerely, Sarah Patel, RN

Task 2 — Responding to Survey Questions

You work at a large hospital in Edmonton. Your employer is conducting a survey to improve employee wellness programs. Write a response of about 150 words. In your response, describe a challenge you face regarding work-life balance and suggest one wellness initiative that could help hospital staff, such as a flexible scheduling option, mental health support, or a fitness subsidy.

Suggested length: about 150 words.

I appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback on the employee wellness program. As a registered nurse working twelve-hour shifts in the emergency department, I have firsthand experience with the physical and emotional demands that healthcare workers face daily. I believe the wellness program should add two specific initiatives. First, I strongly recommend offering on-site massage therapy once a month. Many nurses, including myself, experience chronic back and shoulder pain from lifting patients and standing for extended periods. Even a fifteen-minute chair massage during a break can make a significant difference in both physical comfort and mental alertness for the remainder of a shift. Second, I suggest creating a peer support network for staff who have experienced particularly traumatic cases. The emergency department sees accidents, sudden deaths, and severe injuries on a regular basis, and while we are trained to handle these situations professionally, the emotional impact accumulates over time. A structured debriefing program where staff can speak confidentially with trained colleagues would help prevent burnout and reduce the turnover rate, which has been rising steadily over the past two years.
