Part 3 — Reading for Information

A Each autumn, millions of monarch butterflies leave their summer breeding grounds in Canada and the northern United States and fly up to four thousand kilometres south to the forests of central Mexico, where they spend the winter. Remarkably, the butterflies that migrate have never made the trip before; they follow an inherited route passed down through generations.
B A monarch has striking orange wings edged with black veins and white spots along the margins. Its wingspan is roughly eight to ten centimetres. Males can be told from females by the presence of two black spots on the hind wings, which females lack.
C The monarch passes through four life stages: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly. In most of its range there are four generations in a single year, but only the final generation, born in late summer, lives long enough to make the great migration south.
D Monarch numbers have fallen sharply in recent decades. The main causes are the loss of wildflowers they feed on, the widespread use of pesticides, and the clearing of the milkweed plants their caterpillars depend on. Climate change has also made their Mexican winter homes drier and less safe.

Part 4 — Reading for Viewpoints

Riverton University is debating whether to introduce paid parking for students. Student union president Lena Brooks opposes charges. She argues that many students commute from affordable suburbs and that a fee would add to already high tuition, forcing some to skip campus entirely. She suggests improving bike parking instead.
