CELPIP Reading Practice

4 parts • ~38 questions • ~60 minutes • scored on the 1–12 CELPIP scale

About the CELPIP Reading Section

The CELPIP General Reading test checks how well you understand written English in practical, Canadian contexts. Like the other three sections, it is scored on the 1–12 CELPIP scale that IRCC uses for language proof. You are given roughly 55–60 minutes to work through four parts and about 38 questions.

What the 4 parts cover

  • Part 1 — Reading Correspondence: Read a message, answer questions about it, then choose text to complete a written reply.
  • Part 2 — Reading to Apply a Diagram: Interpret a table, chart, or diagram and answer detail questions.
  • Part 3 — Reading for Information: Match short statements to the correct paragraph (A–E).
  • Part 4 — Reading for Viewpoints: Read an article, then complete a reader comment that reflects the text.

Reading tips for a higher CELPIP score

  • Skim the passage first to grasp the structure, then scan for keywords from each question.
  • For matching tasks, eliminate options you have already placed to narrow your choices.
  • Watch for paraphrases — the correct answer rarely repeats the exact wording of the text.
  • Keep an eye on the timer; the diagram and viewpoint parts are the most time-consuming.
  • Practice with Canadian news, workplace memos, and community notices — the passages reflect those registers.
