The shared compost bin is near the east fence, and the toolshed key can be picked up from our office at 9 Garden Lane during weekday mornings. Your annual membership fee of $25 was paid on April 2nd. All plots must have planting started by May 10th. We are also holding a free soil-prep workshop on April 20th at 10:00 AM — I hope you can attend. Let me know if you have any questions. Part 3 — Reading for Information

A Honeybees (Apis mellifera) are found on every continent except Antarctica and have been domesticated by humans for thousands of years. They typically nest in hollow trees in the wild, but beekeepers house them in rectangular hives that allow easy harvesting of honey and wax. A single healthy colony can contain between 20,000 and 60,000 individuals during the summer peak. Bees prefer habitats with abundant flowering plants nearby, such as meadows, orchards, and gardens, because these provide the steady supply of nectar they need to survive.
B Like all insects, a honeybee has a body divided into three segments: head, thorax, and abdomen. Two pairs of wings and six legs attach to the thorax, while the head carries compound eyes and antennae used for sensing smell and vibration. A specially adapted tongue called a proboscis lets the bee sip liquid nectar from deep flowers. Female worker bees also possess a barbed stinger used only in defence, and tiny hair-like structures on their legs form 'baskets' that hold collected pollen during flight.
C Worker honeybees gather two main foods: nectar and pollen. Nectar, a sugary liquid, is converted into honey and stored as the colony's energy reserve, while pollen provides the protein needed to raise young bees. Foraging bees communicate the location of good flowers to nestmates through a 'waggle dance' that indicates direction and distance. A colony may visit millions of blossoms in a single season, and in doing so the bees pollinate roughly one third of the food crops humans eat.
D Honeybee populations have declined sharply in many regions, a trend scientists call colony collapse disorder. The main pressures are widespread pesticide use, the loss of wildflower habitat to urban and agricultural expansion, and a parasitic mite called Varroa destructor that weakens bees and spreads disease. Climate change further disrupts the timing of flower blooms. Researchers and farmers are responding by planting pollinator corridors, reducing chemical sprays, and breeding more resilient bee stocks to protect this essential species.

Part 4 — Reading for Viewpoints

A tech company is deciding whether to make its remote-work policy permanent. Elena Park, the operations director, argues strongly in favour. She points out that remote work cut the company's office costs dramatically and let them hire talented staff from across the country rather than only locally. She says productivity stayed high and believes the savings justify keeping the policy. David Osei, a team lead, disagrees. He warns that new employees struggle to learn the job without in-person mentoring, and that spontaneous collaboration suffers when everyone is at home. He argues the firm should adopt a hybrid model with three days in the office, saying full remote mainly helps experienced staff, not newcomers.

Questions on the article

1. Elena Park supports permanent remote work because…

  1. it raised office costs
  2. it cut costs and widened hiring
  3. it forced a hybrid model
  4. it reduced productivity
Answer: B

Why: She cites lower costs and national hiring.

2. Which benefit does Elena emphasize?

  1. Higher pay for staff
  2. Cost savings and wider hiring
  3. Less collaboration
  4. Fewer employees
Answer: B

Why: Her argument centres on savings and hiring reach.

3. David Osei's main concern is that new staff…

  1. earn too much
  2. lack in-person mentoring
  3. work too slowly
  4. quit quickly
Answer: B

Why: He says newcomers struggle without mentoring.

4. What arrangement does David prefer?

  1. Fully remote
  2. Hybrid with three office days
  3. No remote work
  4. One office day
Answer: B

Why: He proposes a hybrid with three in-office days.

5. What does David say suffers under full remote work?

  1. Payroll
  2. Collaboration
  3. Profits
  4. Training budget
Answer: B

Why: He warns spontaneous collaboration suffers.

A reader responds — complete the comment

I tend to side with {BLANK_1} on this one. While {BLANK_2} makes a strong case about cost savings, the loss of everyday mentoring is real. New hires really do need the {BLANK_3} contact that an office provides, and {BLANK_4} is right that collaboration takes a hit when everyone is remote. A {BLANK_5} arrangement, with a few days on-site, seems the fairest compromise.

6. Blank 1 — choose the option that fits the passage

  1. Park
  2. Osei
  3. the CEO
  4. the board
Answer: D

Why: The commenter sides with David Osei's cautious view from Passage A.

7. Blank 2 — choose the option that fits the passage

  1. Park
  2. Osei
  3. the intern
  4. the client
Answer: B

Why: Elena Park is the one who argued about cost savings in Passage A.

8. Blank 3 — choose the option that fits the passage

  1. virtual
  2. in-person
  3. written
  4. occasional
Answer: D

Why: Aligns with Osei's point in Passage A that office contact matters.

9. Blank 4 — choose the option that fits the passage

  1. Park
  2. Osei
  3. the accountant
  4. the manager
Answer: A

Why: Osei is the one who said collaboration suffers in Passage A.

10. Blank 5 — choose the option that fits the passage

  1. fully remote
  2. hybrid
  3. traditional
  4. rotating
Answer: D

Why: The compromise matches Osei's hybrid proposal in Passage A.
