TEAS vs HESI A2: Which Nursing Entrance Exam Do You Need?

The one rule that decides everything

You rarely get to choose between the TEAS 7 and the HESI A2 - your nursing program picks the exam, and some programs accept either. So the comparison below is less about 'which is easier' and more about knowing what your school's choice means for how you prepare.

The structural difference: fixed vs modular

The TEAS 7 is a fixed, standardized exam: the same four sections, in the same order, with the same question counts, for every test-taker. The HESI A2 is modular: each school selects which sections to include (commonly Math, Reading, Vocabulary & General Knowledge, Grammar, and Anatomy & Physiology, with other sections optional), which means two students at different schools can sit very different exams.

Which one is harder?

Neither is objectively harder for every student. The honest framing: the TEAS pushes question-format variety and a demanding, broad Science section under strict per-question timing; the HESI tests more subject areas (including vocabulary and sometimes physics) but with a simpler, mostly multiple-choice format. A student strong in anatomy but slow at standardized reading may find the HESI easier; a student strong in comprehension but daunted by A&P may find the TEAS easier.

The review guide hackers miss

Because the HESI is modular, the single most valuable research step is reading your program's admissions page for the exact section list, then confirming which sections are scored. TEAS candidates skip this step because the exam is identical everywhere - but that is also why the published blueprint tells you exactly what to study.
