The four lists
Australia does not have one skilled occupation list; it has several, and each feeds different visas. Knowing which list your job is on tells you which visa you can apply for.
| List | Feeds | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MLTSSL | 189, 190, 491 | Long-term strategic skills; the only list for independent 189 |
| STSOL | 190, 491 | Short-term; state-nominated only |
| ROL | 491 (regional) | Regional occupations |
| CSOL | SID (482), 186 | Core Skills Occupation List (450+ jobs), employer-sponsored |
Which visa each list unlocks
The 189 Skilled Independent needs the MLTSSL and no sponsor. The 190 (state-nominated) and 491 (regional) draw on MLTSSL/STSOL/ROL. Employer-sponsored routes (Skills in Demand / 186) use the broader CSOL. Because independent 189 places were cut to about 16,900 a year, many applicants now rely on 190, 491 or sponsorship.
How to check your occupation
Find your ANZSCO code, then look it up on the official lists and your state's own list (states publish their own priority occupations). A positive skills assessment from the relevant authority (e.g., ANMAC for nurses, ACS for ICT, EA for engineers) is required before you submit an Expression of Interest.
In-demand industries in 2026
Healthcare (nurses, doctors, allied health), trades (electricians, mechanics), technology/software, engineering, education (teachers, early-childhood educators) and accounting are consistently in demand. See our occupation guides for software engineers, engineers and trades.
