How every MET Writing task is marked

Both tasks are rated by trained raters against the same published criteria, so the way to raise your Writing score is to know what they are looking for:

  • Task Completion — did you actually answer every part of the prompt, with enough development?
  • Grammatical Accuracy — sentence structure, tense control, agreement.
  • Vocabulary — range and precision, not just correctness.
  • Mechanics — spelling, punctuation and capitalisation.
  • Cohesion & Organization — paragraphing and linking ideas so a reader can follow you.

MET Writing is scored on a 0–80 scale per skill and mapped to CEFR bands. For Australian visas the writing bar is the highest of any skill: Proficient English needs 74/80 in writing, and that is why the writing section is usually where candidates lose their points. See the MET requirements for Australian visas for the exact thresholds.
