Is MET accepted for VisaScreen?
Yes. MET — the Michigan English Test — is one of the English language proficiency exams that TruMerit lists as accepted for the VisaScreen Visa Credentials Assessment. Applicants must demonstrate oral and written English competency by passing one of the approved exams, and MET is on that list.
Two conditions matter as much as the choice of exam. First, the test has to be taken at a test centre: TruMerit does not accept the at-home versions of any English language proficiency exam. Second, the score you need depends on your profession rather than on the test, and TruMerit publishes those figures in its "Updated list of Tests and Scores for Foreign Health Care Workers" dated 12 May 2026, with different rules for exams taken before that date.
What VisaScreen is and who needs it
The VisaScreen Visa Credentials Assessment is a screening service for healthcare professionals who are seeking an occupational visa to work in the United States. It is run by TruMerit, the organisation formerly known as CGFNS International.
TruMerit is the only credentials evaluation company authorised by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to certify healthcare workers across all nine identified health occupations. Applicants who complete the assessment receive an official International Commission on Healthcare Professions (ICHP) certificate, which satisfies U.S. federal screening requirements. The assessment screens qualifications; the visa decision itself rests with U.S. immigration authorities.
VisaScreen is built around four requirement groups:
| Requirement group | What it covers |
|---|---|
| 1. Education | Professional education comparable to that of a U.S. graduate in the same profession |
| 2. Licensing history | Verification that every professional healthcare licence ever held is valid and without restrictions |
| 3. English language proficiency | A passing score on one of TruMerit's approved English exams, unless an exemption applies |
| 4. Nurse qualifying exam (registered nurses only) | Evidence of passing either the TruMerit Nurse Qualifying Exam or NCLEX-RN |
MET is relevant to the third group. Registered nurses also face the fourth, which is separate from the English requirement.
The English requirement and the approved tests
TruMerit's approved list covers six exam families, each scored on its own scale, so a passing result means something different from one row to the next.
| Approved English exam | Notes |
|---|---|
| MET (Michigan English Test) | The subject of this page; a four-skill digital test taken at approved MET Test Centers or Prometric test centres |
| Cambridge English | B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency |
| TOEFL iBT | Test of English as a Foreign Language, internet-based test |
| Academic IELTS | The Academic version |
| OET | Occupational English Test |
| Pearson PTE Academic | PTE Academic |
A second document matters as much as the list. The "Updated list of Tests and Scores for Foreign Health Care Workers", dated 12 May 2026, sets the minimum score for each approved exam for each profession. Exams taken before 12 May 2026 are assessed under the previous score rules, and the row to read is the one for your own profession.
Which VisaScreen score does MET need to reach?
There is no single MET pass mark for VisaScreen. TruMerit states that the minimum required score varies depending on the profession of the applicant, and the current figures sit in the 12 May 2026 scores table rather than in one general rule. A figure lifted out of context can send a physical therapist or a clinical laboratory scientist after a score that does not apply to them.
To find your own requirement, open TruMerit's VisaScreen English requirement section, find the row for your profession, and note how the requirement is expressed before you book. If your English exam was taken before 12 May 2026, check TruMerit's requirements in force before that date instead.
Treat the published table as the starting point and confirm anything unclear with TruMerit directly; nothing here overrides the figures it publishes.
At-home tests are not accepted
TruMerit does not accept the at-home versions of any English language proficiency exam, MET included. A remotely proctored result does not meet the VisaScreen English requirement, even for the same exam.
Remote at-home MET testing was paused indefinitely: registration closed on 17 September 2026 and the final at-home test date was 30 September 2026. Testing at approved test centres is unaffected, so book a centre-based sitting.
MET is delivered as a digital exam at approved MET Test Centers and at Prometric test centres. The shortened two-skill version, listening and reading only, is offered only at approved MET Test Centers, and most recognising organisations require the four-skill exam — so confirm what you are booking. Our guide to MET registration, test dates and centres sets out the booking path.
Who can be exempted from the English test
There are two routes out of the English exam, and both are narrow.
English-based professional education. An applicant may be exempt if both criteria are met: entry-level professional education took place in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada (except Quebec), New Zealand, Ireland or the United States, and English was the language of instruction, including the language of the textbooks. Education in one of those countries is not enough on its own.
U.S. work experience — VisaScreen renewal only. This route does not apply to a first assessment. For a renewal it requires at least 27 months of employment in the United States, including nine months before the date of the renewal order, in the same profession for which VisaScreen is sought, evidenced by an employer summary on corporate letterhead.
Exemption decisions belong to TruMerit. If you think one of the two routes fits, gather the evidence and ask before paying for a test you may not have needed.
How to prove your MET result
MET issues digital score reports that can be shared with recognising organisations at no additional cost and with no limit on how many receive them. Paperwork for VisaScreen has to reach TruMerit rather than sit in your own files.
TruMerit works from primary-source documentation: records are validated from the issuing body rather than from a copy you supply. So book MET at a test centre, sit the four-skill exam, and share the digital result with TruMerit, allowing time for the test provider and any regulator to send their own records. MET results are typically released within five days of the test.
Once all primary-source documentation has been received and validated, TruMerit reports that 90% of VisaScreen certificates are issued within 3.5 business days, and 50% the same day. Those figures describe the final processing stage only, not the whole application, which also depends on how quickly schools, employers and licensing bodies respond.
MET for U.S. nursing licensure
For internationally educated nurses, VisaScreen is one requirement among several. State boards of nursing set their own English rules for licensure, and a board that accepts MET may ask for a different score from the VisaScreen figure, so treat the two as separate checks.
- MET for U.S. nursing licensure — board-level requirements, in-person testing and the application sequence.
- States accepting MET for nursing — which boards accept it and how their rules differ.
- MET for nurses and healthcare workers — the wider picture across visas and registration.
- Countries and organisations accepting MET — more than 2,000 recognising organisations.
If your next step is a nursing programme rather than a licence, the TEAS practice section covers the admission test used by many U.S. schools. For free MET practice across all four skills, start from the MET practice home or read the MET study guide. Shorter explainers on English tests for migration and licensure are on our blog.
