Canada: Study Permit → PGWP → PR

How Canadian study and work experience build a PR case.

Study permit

A Canadian study permit lets you study at a designated learning institution (DLI). You must show a letter of acceptance, funds and meet the genuine-student requirement. On-campus/off-campus work is allowed within the rules.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)

After a qualifying program, the PGWP lets graduates work in Canada — typically up to 3 years for a master's, with no age cap (unlike Australia's 485). Canadian work experience is one of the strongest PR advantages.

From PGWP to PR

With a year of skilled Canadian experience you can enter Express Entry under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), or use FSWP/PNP. CLB 7+ English via CELPIP is usually required. Canadian education and experience add CRS points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can studying in Canada lead to PR?

Yes — Canadian graduates often qualify for PR through CEC, FSWP or a PNP after skilled work experience.

How long is the PGWP?

Up to 3 years for a master's graduate, with no age cap (unlike Australia's 485).

Which English test do I need for PR?

CELPIP General (IRCC-designated), usually CLB 7+; practise free on PrepSettle.

Does a Canadian degree guarantee PR?

No. You still need eligible skilled experience, language ability and a competitive CRS or nomination.

PrepSettle is an independent practice site, not a migration agent. Visa rules, occupation lists, points and fees change frequently — always confirm the current details on the official sources linked below (canada.ca, immi.homeaffairs.gov.au, studyaustralia.gov.au) before you decide.
